Temperatures first, then shopping. This is currently the state of affairs in the Crimpenhof shopping center in Krimpen aan den IJssel. Immediately after entering, the visitor comes face to face with a device, a kind of tablet on a stand, that can determine the body temperature.
Manager Jan van der Wildt van Crimpenhof has installed six such devices, to increase the sense of security of the customers in this era of corona.
Own choice
He demonstrates how it works: he stands in front of the camera and keeps his face in view within the indicated contours. A friendly female voice calls him 'welcome'. Then the temperature is displayed. "It says: normal temperature, 35.5 degrees. The system measures my skin temperature."
The device has a small margin of 0.3 percent. This way your actual temperature can be slightly higher. Van der Wildt says that the camera is not a medical device and that people should of course consult a doctor in case of complaints.
The measurement in the shopping center is not mandatory. The intention is for visitors to turn around of their own accord if they have a fever. Crimpenhof does not do enforcement. "We count on people to have common sense and think, 'fever is the first indication of an infection, I'm leaving'."
Face recognition
Van der Wildt ran into the scanners during a visit to China. In that country, citizens are monitored in many ways, including with facial recognition cameras. That feature is also included in the Crimean device, but is not used, says the manager. "Then I am punishable and I am not waiting for that."
With a printout via a USB stick, he shows which data is registered. "It just says 'visitor'. You don't see pictures. And you see the temperature." The numbers are green; There are no people with an elevation or fever standing in front of the device today.
Nice shopping
Most visitors do not notice the device yet, but would rather try it out if asked. We do not meet anyone with a raise. "I already knew that. You can feel it yourself," says one. Another likes the confirmation that he does not have a fever.
An elderly couple does not care that it is a camera of Chinese origin. "I'm not bothered by that. I assume he doesn't record anything. He only gives you advice: go home quickly, or come shopping."
