Holidays literally fall into the water: caravan shoots loose and rolls into wetering near Woerden

It was quite a shock. Maarten de Koning had just picked up his caravan after a major overhaul and was driving it over the Kromwijkerdijk in Woerden, when he suddenly heard a loud bang. "I saw the caravan pass by in my mirror and dive into the water. Yes, that's not fun."

The caravan took a dip in the Kromwijker Wetering and had to be fished out again by a salvage company. The damage is enormous: the vehicle is a total loss.
His second home. That's how De Koning describes the caravan. He and his wife have had this house on wheels for ten years and now with retirement in sight they hoped to make full use of it. He had therefore brought the caravan to Van Vliet for maintenance and to have the caravan equipped with some extra facilities at the same time. "All things to make life a bit easier and to be able to camp with it for a long time to come."
After paying a big bill, paid with love, says De Koning, he wanted to return the caravan to the garage. The caravan would remain there until the planned holiday in October. But it all turned out differently.
"I did not put him on the bullet properly," says De Koning afterwards. "And then it jumps off." He is lucky that he drove at a walking pace. "There are also hikers and cyclists on that dike. I am very happy that only the caravan was damaged."
"It's just stuff," he says soberly. But he did shed a tear when he saw his beloved caravan in the wetering. "It's also a very strange sight when you see a caravan floating in the water. I thought for a moment: should I hang an outboard motor on it? But of course it doesn't work that way."
He calls his wife to tell him what happened and in the meantime he is offered help from local residents. "Very nice people there helped very well." They help with the storage, offer a glass of water and a cup of coffee. "Heart warming."
In the end, a recovery company removes the caravan from the water. "The caravan is now at Van Vliet. Next week we will see what can be saved. And maybe we should look for another car." Because despite this enormous setback, De Koning is determined: in October he will be on the road again with a caravan. That is really a go-getter.

Decade Dick: Almost all participants passed the traffic exam

Freek Bredius was a guest in Decennium Dick on behalf of Safe Traffic Netherlands department Krimpen aan den IJssel. He was able to tell us that 421 children participated in the practical traffic exam today. All but five children passed. Congratulations to all! The children who did not make it turned out to have cycled on the route with their hands free. The route started and ended at the Tuyter. Mayor Martijn Vroom was present to officially start the first class. 7.3 Kilometers was cycled and the children of the groups 7 and 8 passed all kinds of difficult intersections and traffic situations in Krimpen aan den IJssel. What was very annoying and difficult was that there have been young people who removed or turned around signs from the route. In addition, some plates are irreparably damaged. It was the first time that this happened on the day of the traffic test. Your browser does not support this audio player. You can download the file . Also in this edition of Decennium Dick a...
