Older couple had machine guns in the attic and cartridges in the oven drawer

The Bunker Museum IJmuiden has been able to expand their collection with a special donation. It is a flawless machine gun from the Second World War, which had been in the attic room of Gré (79) and Gerard Broek (85) in Velsen-Zuid for 23 years.

The resistance weapon, a so-called stengun, had been hidden behind a stack of gramophone records in the cupboard all those years, separated from the cartridges that were kept in the oven drawer. "They thought that was a bit stupid of us."
The gun was fine for the sober couple. That came into their possession after a clean-up operation in the house of a deceased uncle, Gré tells the camera. "Gerard thought it was beautiful and I asked if we could have it. They were happy that they were rid of it and that's how it ended up with us. Until our daughter and sons thought it was no longer such a good idea because of our age. They asked to find another place, because the grandchildren sometimes play in the attic too, "says Gré.
The couple did not hesitate and drove with the stengun on spec to the National Military Museum in Soesterberg, where they opened the trunk of their car. Gerard: "What are you doing now?" They asked us. "They started to trip completely. They were not pleased with that. But luckily one of those employees was kind enough to call an acquaintance who works as a volunteer for the police. That's how things started rolling and after a while there were officers in it. Velsen-Zuid with a bag in front of the door. They then took it with them and after investigation - at our request - brought it to the Bunker Museum. "
Ryan Crapts, of the Bunker Museum IJmuiden, is delighted with the donation. "This is really unique", he laughs to NH Nieuws. "These weapons were dropped in IJmuiden for the resistance. This is therefore enormously valuable for our museum, precisely because it was very probably also used in this location," said the museum secretary.
The weapon will be given a prominent place in the display case, right behind the machine gun used by the IJmuiden resistance hero, Jan Bonekamp. "Anyone can view it, but at the time of corona only by appointment." Gré and Gerard are visibly happy with this and assure Ryan: "We will definitely come back to come and see it." Nice is not it?

Municipalities support National Moluccan Monument

This year it will be 70 years ago that the 1st generation Moluccans were transferred to the Netherlands in 1951 with 12 ship transports. On command, about 4000 Moluccan KNIL soldiers and Navy men came to the Netherlands with their families (in total 12,500 persons). At the point of arrival of the 1st transport ship at the Lloydkade in Rotterdam, it is not yet possible to trace a historical event. The National Moluccan Monument Foundation (LMM) is committed to realizing a monument. The monument will be a tribute to this 1st generation Moluccans and their families and in recognition of the shared past. The monument can also serve to continue telling the story of the arrival of Moluccans in the Netherlands to current and future generations. For anyone interested in this history, the foundation wants to offer an opportunity to learn more. They believe that more knowledge of each other's past leads to more understanding. To realize a monument, the LMM foundation has entered into a p

Largest water lily in the world blooms in Leiden

The oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, has a wonderful pineapple scent. That means that the Victoria Amazonica is in bloom. With leaves that can grow up to two meters wide, this is the largest water lily in the world and its flowers smell like pineapple. The flower of the Victoria Amazonica is a night bloomer and only blooms in high summer. What is special is that the water lily only blooms for two nights. Rogier de Vugt, cashier of the Leiden Hortus Botanicus, knows everything about the plant. "The first night the flower is white and gives off a strong pineapple smell, which attracts beetles. The second night the flower turns pink and has no smell anymore. The beetles still come to it and are covered with pollen", explains De Vugt. Because the plant has an enormous size, only one can grow in the pond of the Hortus. "The leaves have raised edges, so they can't grow over each other, so they can't get any light anymore. Th
