Breakdancer Jeroen covers 20 kilometers head-rolling and hits a bizarre record

Gorcumer Jeroen van der Linden (31) has set the unofficial world record for rollover. Last Saturday he went from Gorinchem to Papendrecht and covered a distance of 20 kilometers while head rolling. The official record (19.3 kilometers) is held by the American Ahrita Furman.
Van der Linden is a professional break dancer and founder and member of BreakSquad, a dance group that is causing a furore at home and abroad. He previously performed 'stunts' in Gorinchem by climbing the Grote Toren 112 times in 14 hours and walking the 5-kilometer-long city walls of Gorinchem a month ago. On his hands !!!
Earlier this month, he announced that he wanted to push his boundaries again by head-rolling from Gorinchem to Rotterdam, bridging a distance of about 30 kilometers. A challenge that was too difficult, as it turned out later. But there was a philosophy behind it. “I had set Rotterdam as a goal. Beyond my final goal. I had to get over those 20 kilometers. And you always have to go a step further mentally to achieve that. ”
Moreover, because of the curfew, Rotterdam turned out not to be feasible. Van der Linden left his hometown around 7:00 am and arrived at Sliedrecht-East around 3:30 pm. In those 8.5 hours he had covered just under 8 miles. The first 8 kilometers in particular were tough, the breakdancer looks back: “A long straight road on asphalt. It was very bad. ”
He mainly walked the Tiendweg between Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Sliedrecht through the grass. But that also had disadvantages: dog poo and nettles. The support team therefore sometimes walked a bit ahead to check the verge. De Gorcumer and his support team drew the necessary attention from passing walkers and cyclists. Jeroen: ,, When they saw me roll over, they said: how nice. But when they saw me resting, they thought I was either drunk or dying. ” From time to time Father Ben came to check it out and provided his son with food and drink. “Whether my son is crazy? Well, judge for yourself. But I'd rather people do these kinds of challenges than do nasty things that harm other people. ”
Halfway through the rollover adventure, near Sliedrecht, he took a longer break to eat some fruit and drink a lot. Then his body was already hurting. “Most muscles hurt. And I no longer feel the muscles that don't hurt ”, he laughed cheerfully. And so his mood stayed for the rest of the tour. Don't complain, keep going. Show discipline. Pushing boundaries. Challenging yourself physically and mentally. Because you can do more than you think. Around 9 p.m. he arrived with his team in Papendrecht and the unofficial world record was a fact. He couldn't get rid of it unscathed. Although he was dressed in heavy trousers, a thick hooded jacket, a body warmer and work gloves, his entire body was injured. “Both my shoulders are open and my right hip. And when I took off my sweater, I also took a piece of skin with me. The muscle pain is not too bad. ”
The Gorcumer does not mind that it remains an unofficial world record. “If you want to invite the Guinness Book of Records to make your record performance official, it will cost you $ 8,000. And I don't think it's worth it. Because I prefer to spend $ 8,000 on people who need it instead of a world record in a book. ”
Jeroen van der Linden will soon take on a new challenge. Which? He doesn't want to say that just yet. Well, I am very curious.

Municipalities support National Moluccan Monument

This year it will be 70 years ago that the 1st generation Moluccans were transferred to the Netherlands in 1951 with 12 ship transports. On command, about 4000 Moluccan KNIL soldiers and Navy men came to the Netherlands with their families (in total 12,500 persons). At the point of arrival of the 1st transport ship at the Lloydkade in Rotterdam, it is not yet possible to trace a historical event. The National Moluccan Monument Foundation (LMM) is committed to realizing a monument. The monument will be a tribute to this 1st generation Moluccans and their families and in recognition of the shared past. The monument can also serve to continue telling the story of the arrival of Moluccans in the Netherlands to current and future generations. For anyone interested in this history, the foundation wants to offer an opportunity to learn more. They believe that more knowledge of each other's past leads to more understanding. To realize a monument, the LMM foundation has entered into a p

Largest water lily in the world blooms in Leiden

The oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, has a wonderful pineapple scent. That means that the Victoria Amazonica is in bloom. With leaves that can grow up to two meters wide, this is the largest water lily in the world and its flowers smell like pineapple. The flower of the Victoria Amazonica is a night bloomer and only blooms in high summer. What is special is that the water lily only blooms for two nights. Rogier de Vugt, cashier of the Leiden Hortus Botanicus, knows everything about the plant. "The first night the flower is white and gives off a strong pineapple smell, which attracts beetles. The second night the flower turns pink and has no smell anymore. The beetles still come to it and are covered with pollen", explains De Vugt. Because the plant has an enormous size, only one can grow in the pond of the Hortus. "The leaves have raised edges, so they can't grow over each other, so they can't get any light anymore. Th
